Why go

This record is the palace, which the Bavarian Palace Department (Bayerische Schlösserverwaltung) runs and describes as forming, with the cathedral and the Old Court (Alte Hofhaltung), the historic ensemble of the Domplatz. Its page (in German) says the two rear Renaissance wings were built in 1604 to 1612 and the two Baroque wings on the Domplatz in 1697 to 1703 for Prince-Bishop Lothar Franz von Schönborn to plans by Leonhard Dientzenhofer, and that three state apartments document its use as the seat of the prince-bishops and, after secularisation, as a Wittelsbach residence; Melchior Steidl frescoed the Imperial Hall in 1707 to 1709. The building also houses the State Gallery of the Bavarian State Painting Collections, and the rose garden lies in its courtyard. The page says guided tours run regularly in the Prince-Bishop's Apartment while the other rooms can be seen without a tour, and that the Electoral Apartment and the Old German Gallery are closed for renovation until further notice.
