Why go

Büyükada (5.46 km²) is the largest of the nine islands making up Adalar, the Princes' Islands, an Istanbul Metropolitan Municipality (İBB) administrative district in the Sea of Marmara. Motorised vehicles are forbidden on the island except service and emergency vehicles; horse-drawn phaetons, once the island's signature transport, were phased out in 2020 following a serious equine disease (glanders) outbreak and are not currently operating. Bicycle rental and electric minibuses (operated with İstanbulkart/Ada-card fares) are the current ways to get around beyond walking. The island is reached by ferry from the city; Şehir Hatları, the municipal operator, runs it as a named stop on the Adalar line (Kabataş–Kadıköy–Kınalıada–Burgazada–Heybeliada–Büyükada–Bostancı and reverse), and private operators including TURYOL also serve it directly from several city piers. The waterfront terminal building itself, a 1914–1915 masonry structure by architect Mihran Azaryan replacing an 1899 wooden terminal, is the landmark most visitors recognise on arrival.

Getting there

Reached only by ferry — there is no bridge or other land connection. Şehir Hatları (the municipal operator) serves Büyükada as a named stop on its Adalar line from Kabataş and Bostancı via the other three main islands; private operators including TURYOL also run direct services from other city piers (Eminönü, Kadıköy, Karaköy). Exact current departure times and fares are not confirmed from an operator-primary source — treat any timetable you see as a same-day check, not a fixed schedule; service runs year-round with multiple daily departures, more frequent in summer. On the island itself: no private cars (service and emergency vehicles only), no horse-drawn phaetons (phased out in 2020 after a glanders outbreak — do not expect this as a current activity), bicycle rental widely available, and electric minibuses running on İstanbulkart/Ada-card fares as the current public-transport option. Private electric 'golf cart' style vehicles are not generally rentable by visitors — permits are restricted to residents and specific accessibility categories.

Best time to visit

Ferry service and the car-free island itself operate year-round. Multiple sources describe more frequent summer ferry service and a busier, more crowded island in the summer season, consistent with it being a popular day-trip and weekend destination for Istanbul residents, but no operator publishes a specific reduced-winter timetable that could be cited as a documented seasonal schedule.
