The Camposanto Monumentale is the walled monumental cemetery on the north side of Pisa's Piazza del Duomo, founded in 1277, with fourteenth- and fifteenth-century frescoes on its inner walls.

Why go

This record is the cemetery building on Pisa's Piazza del Duomo, not the square or the Sinopie Museum. The Opera della Primaziale Pisana, which runs the square's monuments, says it was founded in 1277 to gather the graves then scattered around the cathedral, and that its inner walls were frescoed with scenes of life and death by Francesco Traini and Bonamico Buffalmacco and later by painters up to Benozzo Gozzoli. The Opera says the building came into use as a museum in the early nineteenth century, when Carlo Lasinio gathered works from the city's suppressed churches there. Its ticket advice page gives one set of ticket conditions for the Camposanto, the Baptistery, the Sinopie Museum and the Opera del Duomo Museum, and its safety notes say large luggage and suitcases are not allowed.
