Why go

Pisa Cathedral, dedicated to the Assumption of the Virgin, was founded in 1064 and consecrated in 1118, according to the Opera della Primaziale Pisana, the vestry board that sells tickets for the monuments of Piazza del Duomo. This record is the cathedral building, not its bell tower (the Leaning Tower), the baptistery or the square. The Opera's advice page says entry to the Cathedral is by a pass: any ticket for the square's monuments includes one with no fixed time, while fixed-time passes for the Cathedral alone are limited in number, issued only at the on-site ticket offices and cannot be booked in advance. The same page asks visitors to dress and behave appropriately in a place of worship, and says that during masses and special ceremonies visitors are limited to part of the building.
