East Side Gallery

The East Side Gallery is a section of the Berlin Wall along Mühlenstrasse in Berlin's Friedrichshain, between Ostbahnhof and the Oberbaum Bridge, painted in 1990 by artists from 21 countries and presented by the Berlin Wall Foundation.

Why go

The Berlin Wall Foundation says the East Side Gallery extends for more than 1.3 kilometres between Ostbahnhof and the Oberbaum Bridge and that 118 artists from 21 countries painted it after the fall of the Wall; it opened on 28 September 1990. The foundation explains that it stands on a section of the former Hinterlandmauer, the inner wall facing East Berlin, because the whole width of the Spree here belonged to East Berlin. It says the site was added to the State of Berlin's list of monuments in November 1991, that many artists repainted their pictures after restoration work in 2008 and 2009, and that 'Hands' by Margaret Hunter and Peter Russell is the only painting surviving in its original state from 1990. The foundation's visitor page says guided tours meet at the info point at Mühlenstrasse 73, on the Spree side of the wall. This record is the wall section as a whole, not any single mural; its map point stands for the whole length and is not a way in.
