Istiqlal Mosque
Masjid Istiqlal
The Istiqlal Mosque is a mosque on Jalan Taman Wijaya Kusuma in Sawah Besar, Central Jakarta, designed by Friedrich Silaban and inaugurated by President Soeharto in 1978.
Why go
The mosque's history page says a foundation to build it was set up on 7 December 1954, that Friedrich Silaban won the 1955 design competition with an entry code-named 'Ketuhanan', and that construction ran from 24 August 1961 until President Soeharto inaugurated it on 22 February 1978; its name, Istiqlal, means independence. It stands beside Jakarta Cathedral: the cathedral parish's history page says President Soekarno set the national mosque's site next to the cathedral, and that in February 2020 President Joko Widodo accepted a proposal for an underground 'Terowongan Silaturahmi' tunnel linking the two. The mosque's site offers an official registration form for domestic and foreign group visits ('Reservasi Kunjungan'). This record is the mosque; the Bayt Al-Qur'an and Istiqlal Museum at Taman Mini is a separate institution. Visiting times around prayers and any dress expectations are set by the mosque and are not stated here.
