National Monument (Monas)
Monumen Nasional
The National Monument (Monas) is the obelisk in the middle of Merdeka Square in Gambir, Central Jakarta, built from 1961 as a symbol of Indonesia's struggle for independence.
Why go
The Jakarta provincial government's portal describes Monas as a square obelisk clad in Italian marble, 132 metres high and topped by a gilded flame, designed and built by the Indonesian architects and engineers Soedarsono, Silaban and Rooseno, work the portal dates to 1961. It stands on Jalan Tugu Monas in the middle of Merdeka Square, and the portal says visitors can take a lift to the top level to look out over the city. This record is the monument; Merdeka Square around it and the Merdeka Palace across the square are separate places. Ragunan Zoo's ticket page lists the National Monument among the places where the Bank DKI JakCard stored-value card can be used. Opening times and ticket arrangements are set by the monument's management and change, so check before you go.
