Jakarta Cathedral
Katedral Jakarta
Jakarta Cathedral is the neo-Gothic Catholic cathedral of Saint Mary of the Assumption on Jalan Katedral in Central Jakarta, consecrated in 1901 and standing beside the Istiqlal Mosque.
Why go
The parish's history page says the present church was designed by the Jesuit priest-architect Antonius Dijkmans, built from 1899 under the engineer M.J. Hulswit and consecrated on 21 April 1901 by the Apostolic Vicar Edmundus Sybrandus Luypen; its forerunner on the site was blessed as the cathedral in 1829. The parish calls it a national cultural heritage site and says that in 2020 President Joko Widodo accepted a proposal for an underground 'Terowongan Silaturahmi' to link it with the Istiqlal Mosque beside it. Its Mass page says no registration is needed for daily, first-Friday or Sunday Masses and asks worshippers to dress neatly and modestly. The Cathedral Museum in the church's balcony, which the provincial portal says opened in 1991, is a separate subject. Mass times are on the parish site.
