Jungfraujoch
The Jungfraujoch is a mountain pass in the Bernese Alps on the border of the cantons of Bern and Valais, reached by the Jungfrau Railway, with the railway's station and the Sphinx Terrace viewing platform at the col.
Why go
The Jungfraujoch is a high mountain pass on the border of the cantons of Bern and Valais; this record is the col, not the Jungfrau Railway or its Jungfraujoch station, which are separate subjects. Jungfraubahnen, which runs the railway, says the Jungfrau Railway has run through the Eiger and the Mönch to its station on the Jungfraujoch since 1912. Its Jungfraujoch page describes the Sphinx Terrace at 3571 m with a view of the Aletsch Glacier, and a glacier platform, an Ice Palace with ice sculptures and a multimedia tour of the railway's history at 3454 m, and it places the Jungfraujoch in the UNESCO World Heritage Site Swiss Alps Jungfrau-Aletsch. For the journey up, the operator strongly recommends a paid seat reservation in good weather. The col is not in Interlaken, which XTOUR treats as a travel base only.
