Kız Kulesi (Maiden's Tower), a historic tower on a small islet off Salacak, Üsküdar, at the southern entrance of the Bosphorus — a Ministry of Culture and Tourism monument, reachable only by boat, reopened in May 2023 after restoration.

The islet has served as a customs point since the 5th century BCE; a defence tower was built here under Manuel I Komnenos (1143–1180), with a chain running to Sarayburnu, rebuilt as a castle after 1453 and given a lantern in the Tulip era. Most of what stands today dates from a rebuild under Sultan Mahmud II in 1832–33; the tower also served as a quarantine hospital during 19th-century cholera and plague outbreaks, and later as a leased restaurant following a 1995–2000 restoration. A Ministry restoration begun in 2021 removed later additions that did not match the building's original character and reopened the tower as a monument on 11 May 2023; the restaurant use has ended. The official site retells the legends attached to the tower — a king's daughter and a snake, Battal Gazi, and Hero and Leander (itself originally a Dardanelles story later transferred here by 18th-century travellers). Boats run from both Salacak (Üsküdar shore) and Karaköy (European shore); according to the Ministry's own timetable, read 22 September 2026, Salacak has sixteen daily departures (09:30–20:00) and Karaköy has seven (09:30–18:30) — Karaköy is the less frequent of the two, not a token service.
Reachable only by boat, from either Salacak (Üsküdar shore) or Karaköy (European shore, near Ziraat Bankası). According to the Ministry's timetable, read 22 September 2026, Salacak has sixteen daily departures (09:30–20:00) and Karaköy has seven (09:30–18:30, roughly every 90 minutes); both piers are shown in the Ministry's own English text as well as its Turkish text and timetable. The museum admission fee excludes the boat crossing, which is billed separately. Under-18s must visit accompanied by a parent. Boat times may change with weather, per the Ministry page.

Boat boarding (step height, life jackets for infants), the tower's internal stairs, stroller handling and wheelchair boarding/routing are not published by the Ministry or the tower's own site — ask at the Salacak visitor centre before travelling with a stroller or a wheelchair user. Toilets and baby-care facilities on the islet are not published either; use facilities on shore before boarding.
