Mirabell Palace
Schloss Mirabell
Mirabell Palace is a palace in Salzburg, built in 1606 for Prince-Archbishop Wolf Dietrich, that now houses the offices of the mayor and the city administration.
Why go
This record is the palace building, not the Mirabell Gardens beside it, which are a separate record. Salzburg's tourism board says Prince-Archbishop Wolf Dietrich von Raitenau had it built in 1606, originally as Schloss Altenau, for Salome Alt and their children, that his successor Markus Sittikus renamed it Mirabell, and that it was later rebuilt as a Baroque palace under Franz Anton Harrach. Today, the board says, it houses the offices of the mayor and the municipal administration; the Marble Hall, the former banqueting hall reached by Georg Raphael Donner's angel staircase, is used for weddings, conferences and concerts. The board says that apart from the palace stairway and the Marble Hall, the rooms are used by the city administration and cannot be visited, and that the Marble Hall cannot be visited during special occasions.
