Sant Pau Recinte Modernista
Sant Pau Recinte Modernista · Sant Pau Art Nouveau Site · Sant Pau
Sant Pau Recinte Modernista is the complex of modernista hospital pavilions by Lluís Domènech i Montaner in Barcelona's Horta-Guinardó district, restored after healthcare moved to a new hospital and now open to visitors.
Why go
Sant Pau Recinte Modernista, the Sant Pau Art Nouveau Site, is the complex of modernista pavilions designed by Lluís Domènech i Montaner for the Hospital de la Santa Creu i Sant Pau; the working hospital that replaced it is not this record. The site's 'Who are we?' page says the pavilions housed the hospital for a century, that the transfer of healthcare to the new hospital allowed their restoration, and that the modernist pavilions were declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1997. The same page says the site is owned by the Fundació Privada Hospital de la Santa Creu i Sant Pau, whose members are the Cathedral Chapter, Barcelona City Council and the Government of Catalonia. Its history page traces the institution to 1401, when six city hospitals merged into the Hospital de la Santa Creu. The visit page offers self-guided and guided visits and says the route may change depending on which spaces are available.
