Shengavit Settlement

An Early Bronze Age town on a promontory over Lake Yerevan, lived in for more than a thousand years from the fourth millennium BC and enclosed by stone walls two to four metres wide.

Why go
Excavations began in 1936 and are still going on. They have traced a settlement estimated at 500 to 700 houses, a triple line of walls with towers on the side facing the Hrazdan gorge, and graves with beads of gold, silver, carnelian, jasper and glass that point to a sharply unequal society. The pottery links Shengavit to the Kura–Araxes culture. A small museum beside the site shows some of the finds, and the settlement is a branch of the Erebuni Museum-Reserve. This is a stop for travellers curious about prehistory, and it pairs naturally with Erebuni and Karmir Blur.
