Siena Cathedral is the cathedral of Santa Maria Assunta on Piazza del Duomo in Siena, Tuscany, with an inlaid marble floor of 56 panels.
Why go
Siena Cathedral is run as part of a monumental complex by the Opera della Metropolitana di Siena, a non-profit body that says ticket revenue goes to conserving the complex; the Piccolomini Library, the Museo dell'Opera, the Crypt, the Baptistery and the other sites of that complex are not this record. The Opera's cathedral page describes the floor as 56 inlaid panels, begun in the fourteenth century and finished only in the nineteenth. Visit Siena, the Comune di Siena's tourism site, says about two-thirds of the floor is usually covered by protective panels and is uncovered only for set periods; Visit Siena and the Opera give different periods, so check the Opera's visit page. The Opera's visit page says tickets are sold online, through its call centre and at the ticket offices at Piazza Duomo 7 and the Visitor Center in Via di Città 48, and that the cathedral is always open to worshippers for prayer through the Porta del Perdono.
