The Sacred Monkey Forest Sanctuary (Ubud Monkey Forest) is a forest sanctuary with temples and long-tailed macaques in the village of Padangtegal in Ubud, Bali.
Why go
The sanctuary's own site describes the Sacred Monkey Forest Sanctuary, also known as the Ubud Monkey Forest, as a nature reserve and temple complex in the village of Padangtegal in Ubud, covering about 12.5 hectares and home to long-tailed macaques. Its FAQ names three temples inside, the main temple Pura Dalem Agung Padangtegal, the Holy Spring Temple and the Cremation Temple, and says the temple is only for prayer in the Balinese tradition; its about page says visitors are not permitted to enter some sacred temples. Bali's provincial tourism register lists it as 'Wanara Wana Lk. Pura Dalem' in Desa Padang Tegal, managed by the Padangtegal customary village (Desa Pekraman Padang Tegal). The sanctuary's guidelines page asks visitors not to touch the monkeys or feed or interact with them unless under the direct supervision of trained staff, says bringing food or drinks into the forest is prohibited, asks visitors to dress respectfully, and says some sacred areas are off-limits. Its visit page says the entrance is through the lobby by the central parking area, where tickets are sold.
