Why go

Wat Lokayasutharam is a temple ruin on the city island of Ayutthaya, in Pratu Chai subdistrict behind the old royal palace. The province's tourism pages describe a reclining Buddha image 42 metres long resting in the open, its head supported by a lotus, surrounded by 24 octagonal brick pillars that were probably built to carry a cover over it, and a chedi about 30 metres high; they say the temple is believed to date from the middle Ayutthaya period and that the image was restored in 1954 and 1989. The Fine Arts Department's Ayutthaya Historical Park unit has published a procurement plan for a project to restore this reclining Buddha. The record is the temple site, not the image alone.
