Getting around Dilijan
The town itself is small enough to walk, though it is built on a slope and the historic quarter sits below the main road, so the walk back up is steeper than it looks. Everything worth seeing outside the town — Haghartsin, Goshavank, Parz Lake, the trailheads — requires either a vehicle or a serious walk, and this is the single most important planning fact about Dilijan. There is no useful local bus network to the monasteries. Taxis are readily arranged through guesthouses and are the normal solution, most economically as a half-day hire covering several stops with waiting time rather than as separate trips. Ride-hailing apps have limited coverage here compared with Yerevan. Marshrutkas run along the main highway connecting Yerevan, Sevan, Dilijan and Ijevan and are frequent enough to be practical for arriving and leaving, but they depart when reasonably full rather than to a strict timetable and thin out in the afternoon. Driving yourself is straightforward in good weather and gives the most freedom; the mountain roads demand more care in rain, fog and snow.
Problems worth knowing
The monasteries have no public transport
Haghartsin and Goshavank are not served by useful bus routes. Travellers arriving expecting to reach them without a taxi or car routinely end up seeing neither.
Combining Sevan and Dilijan in one day leaves almost no time
The pairing is common but the drive from Yerevan, a stop at Sevan and a return leaves roughly two hours in Dilijan, which is not enough for the forest, the monasteries or the old town.
Afternoon marshrutkas thin out
Return services towards Yerevan reduce through the afternoon. Confirm the last realistic departure locally rather than assuming an evening option exists.
Trail markings are inconsistent
Waymarking in the national park varies in quality and paths disappear under leaf litter in autumn. Download offline maps and check conditions at the visitor centre.
Winter driving over the passes
The approaches from Sevan and towards Ijevan cross high ground and can be difficult or briefly closed in heavy snow. Check conditions before driving between November and March.
