Turkish coffee is treated by UNESCO as a symbol of hospitality, friendship and refinement, and is served with a glass of water and drunk mainly in coffee-houses where people meet to talk; the grounds left in the cup are often used to tell a person's fortune. Separately, the FCDO notes that it is illegal to insult the Turkish nation or the national flag.
Religion & cultural sites
Hagia Sophia, the Blue Mosque and Kariye are active mosques, and visits fit around prayer. The Blue Mosque's association requires clothing that covers what worship requires, both inside the mosque and in its courtyard, offers loan garments from a cabin, forbids loud talking inside and outside and smoking in the courtyard, keeps visiting and worship areas separate, and closes to visitors from 30 minutes before the noon and afternoon prayers until 15 minutes after them, and on Friday until 14:30. Hagia Sophia has separate entrances for worshippers and foreign cultural visitors. A 2024 report on Kariye Mosque described tourist visits pausing 15 minutes before each prayer and closed on Fridays.
