Health & practical risks
Methanol in illegal or counterfeit spirits
The FCDO says people have died or been seriously ill after drinking illegally produced local spirits and counterfeit bottles of branded alcohol, and that even small amounts of methanol can kill.
Demonstrations
The FCDO says regular demonstrations and protests are taking place in Istanbul and other cities, may become violent, and have involved tear gas and water cannon.
Earthquakes
The FCDO says many parts of Turkey regularly experience earthquakes and tremors that can be high-magnitude and pose a risk to life. It does not single Istanbul out in that sentence.
What tourists often get wrong
A Hagia Sophia ticket lets you walk the prayer hall.
Since 15 January 2024 the Ministry has kept worshippers and foreign cultural visitors on separate routes: visitors are taken to the upper gallery and look down on the ground-floor prayer hall.
Chora is a museum.
It was a museum from 1945, but it is a working mosque again: it reopened for worship and visitors on 6 May 2024 under the Directorate General of Foundations, and an August 2024 report described tourist visits as closed on Fridays and paused around prayers.
The Galata Tower lift takes you to the top.
The lift stops at the sixth floor. The eighth-floor balcony is reached by a steel staircase, and the walk down is by stairs built into the walls.
You can pair Topkapı and Dolmabahçe on any weekday.
Topkapı is closed on Tuesdays and Dolmabahçe (and Beylerbeyi) on Mondays, according to Milli Saraylar.
Any Bosphorus boat lets you go inside Maiden's Tower.
The Ministry lists its own boats from Salacak and Karaköy as the way to reach the tower on its rock 200 metres off the shore.
