Health & practical risks

01

Mountain weather

Conditions can change rapidly. Carry layers and waterproof clothing even when the morning is sunny.

02

Altitude

Mestia itself is around 1,500 m, while many excursions climb above 2,500 m. Pace yourself, hydrate and take symptoms seriously.

03

Glacier and rockfall hazards

Do not walk onto glaciers or unstable moraine areas without appropriate knowledge and equipment. Rockfall risk can change with weather.

04

Stray and shepherd dogs

Dogs are common in rural areas. Avoid provoking or approaching guarding dogs and give livestock herds space.

05

Winter road conditions

Snow and ice can make roads difficult. Use suitable vehicles, tyres and experienced drivers.

06

Freeride and avalanche terrain

Svaneti is famous for off-piste skiing, but unmarked terrain can involve avalanche exposure and other mountain hazards. Advanced ski touring and freeride routes require appropriate equipment, current avalanche knowledge and qualified guiding.

07

Limited medical resources

Basic medical help is available locally, but serious emergencies may require transfer. Travel insurance covering mountain activities is sensible.

What tourists often get wrong

Mestia is only a hiking destination.

The town also offers major cultural heritage, museums, traditional architecture, winter skiing and regional cuisine.

The stories about traditional Svan cannabis food are just a modern joke.

There is documented local oral history of cannabis and hemp being used domestically in Svaneti for fiber, oil and cooking. Historical preparations reportedly included knash, a cheese bread containing cannabis, as well as cannabis used in pkhali and even kubdari. This should be understood as a largely disappeared part of Svan culinary history, not something visitors should expect restaurants to serve today.

Ushguli is a quick side trip.

The distance is modest, but the mountain road can take hours each way. A rushed same-day visit can become exhausting.

A sunny morning guarantees safe mountain weather.

Cloud, rain, thunderstorms and fog can develop quickly in the Caucasus.

Every road shown on a map is suitable for a normal car.

Some mountain roads and trail approaches require 4WD or may become difficult after rain or snow.
