UNESCO's World Heritage properties at Ayutthaya and Sukhothai are designations drawn over historic cities, not the same things as the historical parks visitors enter. This explainer sets out what UNESCO's own documents say each property covers, how the parks differ from it, and why XTOUR never treats a designation and a park as one record.
Si Satchanalai and Kamphaeng Phet are the other two towns in the World Heritage property inscribed with Sukhothai in 1991, each run as a historical park by the Fine Arts Department. This guide explains what each park covers, how each is laid out for a visitor, what the department's pages say about entry, and where the department and ICOMOS give different figures.
Songkran is Thailand's solar new year, held on fixed days in April; Loy Krathong follows the lunar calendar, so its date moves every year; Yi Peng is the northern lantern tradition that the Tourism Authority of Thailand describes as part of Loy Krathong. This explainer sets out what official Thai sources say about each, how their dates are fixed and announced, and what had not been announced when XTOUR last checked, on 9 October 2026.
Sukhothai and Ayutthaya were successive capitals of Siam, and both survive as historical parks run by the Fine Arts Department. This guide compares them by what each park is, what UNESCO inscribed at each, and how each relates to the town XTOUR treats as its destination.
XTOUR plans Thailand around places you can stay in: the towns and cities of Bangkok, Ayutthaya, Sukhothai, Kanchanaburi, Chiang Mai, Chiang Rai, Phuket Town and Krabi Town, and the islands of Phuket, Ko Samui and Ko Pha-ngan. This guide says what each base is for in XTOUR's coverage, which sites are reached from a base rather than inside it, and where XTOUR's detailed guides take over.
A wat is a whole temple compound; a chedi and a prang are two kinds of reliquary tower; the ubosot (bot) is the hall for monks' formal acts and the wihan is a place housing a Buddha image. This explainer gives the Royal Society of Thailand's definitions and shows how official English pages translate the same buildings in conflicting ways.
