Langkawi island hopping, jet ski and yacht trips

Langkawi's sea products on XTOUR are less alike than their titles suggest. Four are guided jet ski tours from one beach on Pantai Cenang, two are boat tours of the southern islands, one is a catamaran cruise and one is an international ferry. In XTOUR's reading, three questions sort them: do you want to drive, does the Dayang Bunting lake swim matter, and where on the island are you starting.

Speedboat or private boat: the southern islands

The Langkawi Island Hopping Tour by Speedboat has five options on SkyGate: a shared morning tour, a shared afternoon tour, and half-day private charters for up to 8, 12 or 16 people. Its itinerary names photo stops at Dino View and Lion Rock, fish feeding at Jong Island, eagle watching at Singa Besar Island and beach time at Beras Basah Island. Pulau Dayang Bunting is a photo pass on this tour: the listing says to take a photo from the boat with the island as a backdrop, and it does not mention landing or the lake. Snorkelling or a BBQ lunch at Lion Marine Island appear only under "if you chose the option with", and none of the five option titles names either, so XTOUR cannot tell you which option includes them. SkyGate lists "Boat Ride" as the only inclusion.[1]

Free hotel transfers apply only to hotels in the Pantai Cenang and Pantai Tengah area; everyone else goes directly to Jetty Teluk Baru, according to the listing.[1] XTOUR has not verified that jetty or identified the boat operator. The listing also says the itinerary is subject to change because of weather and traffic.[1]

The Langkawi Southern Island Geopark Boat Tour is a private boat trip with one option on SkyGate. Its listing includes a swim in the freshwater lake on Pregnant Maiden Island (Pulau Dayang Bunting) and eagle watching at Singa Besar Island, with a stop at Teluk Cawi or Beras Basah Island only "depending on conditions". Admission to the lake is not included: SkyGate says it is an add-on of RM23 per person, payable in cash at the counter on the day of the tour.[2] JungleWalla, the operator whose page matches this listing, gives the meeting point as Pekan Rabu Pier in Kuah town and says the tour runs by private arrangement only, for up to eight passengers per boat.[11] SkyGate adds that tours may be rescheduled, cancelled or adjusted for unsafe weather or sea conditions.[2]

LADA, the Langkawi Development Authority, describes Pulau Dayang Bunting as the second-largest island in the archipelago and says the lake formed when a large limestone cave collapsed.[12] For the lake itself, see the Tasik Dayang Bunting page on XTOUR.

The four Mega Water Sports jet ski tours

All four jet ski products are run by Mega Water Sports, and SkyGate gives the company's base on Pantai Cenang as the address for each.[4][3] The Tuba Island and Makan Makan itineraries say to make your own way to its beach hut on Cenang Beach, behind the Orkid Ria restaurant.[6][5] The operator's contact page gives Langkawi Tailor as its landmark on Jalan Pantai Cenang.[9] Each starts with a safety briefing and training before you ride behind a tour leader.[5][3]

The Langkawi Island Hopping Tour by Jet Ski has four options: 9:00 AM or 2:00 PM, single or double rider. The itinerary visits Singa Besar Island for eagle watching, Beras Basah beach and Intan Kecil for a short swim, and ends back at the meeting point at 11:00 AM or 4:00 PM. SkyGate says children aged 5 to 15 must ride with an adult, and that riders must be at least 16 to operate a jet ski, under strict conditions.[3]

The Langkawi Dayang Bunting Island Jet Ski Tour has the same four time and rider options. Its itinerary lands on Pulau Dayang Bunting for a walk to the freshwater lake and a swim, then continues to the fjords, a limestone island, Singa Besar, Beras Basah and Intan Kecil, ending at 1:00 PM or 6:00 PM. SkyGate's inclusions for this tour do not list lake admission.[4] Mega Water Sports' own FAQ says it covers the entrance costs for Dayang Bunting Lake.[9] XTOUR has not verified whether that applies to a booking made through SkyGate.

The Tuba Island Discovery Tour by Jet Ski offers 9:00 AM morning or 2:00 PM afternoon departures, single or double. It explores Pulau Tuba's hidden chambers and limestone formations, stops at Singa Besar Island, visits Eagle Square and includes a meal of prawn noodles, ending at 1:00 PM or 6:00 PM. The Langkawi Makan Makan Food Tour by Jet Ski is an afternoon-only ride with two options, both at 3:00 PM: single or double rider. It heads towards the Matchinchang Geoforest Park past small islands, villages and fishing ports, stops at Pantai Kok for local teatime snacks, and ends at 5:00 PM; a meal is in the inclusions. Children under 5 may not join, and those aged 5 to 15 must ride with an adult.[6]

Crystal Yacht: sunset dinner or Geopark day

The Langkawi Sunset and Day Cruises by Crystal Yacht listing has six options: the Premium Sunset Dinner Cruise or the Geopark Day Cruise, each without transfers, with transfers, or with transfers from Datai and Tanjung Rhu only. SkyGate lists a BBQ meal, alcoholic drinks, water and soft drinks, a life jacket and insurance as included.[7] Crystal Yacht says its cruises depart from Resorts World Langkawi.[10] On shared cruises you cannot choose the boat, and the beach stop on the Geopark Day Cruise is available only between December and March, according to the listing. SkyGate's description mentions shared and private cruises, but none of the six option titles names a private charter.[7]

The ferry between Langkawi and Koh Lipe

The Ferry between Telaga Harbour, Langkawi and Koh Lipe sells one-way tickets only: eight options, split by direction and by low, shoulder or peak season, with morning and afternoon options in peak season. SkyGate says Satun Pakbara Speedboat runs the service in a season from the end of October to the end of May, leaving from the private terminal at Telaga Harbour and arriving at Pattaya beach on Koh Lipe, with immigration clearance at both terminals. The listing gives the crossing as 1 hour 15 minutes. It asks for a passport valid for at least six months, a visa where needed, and arrival at the terminal at least an hour before departure. National park fees are excluded: the listing puts the fee at 200 baht per person, paid on check-in at Koh Lipe, and advises carrying Thai baht.[8] Koh Lipe is in Thailand and XTOUR has no destination page for it, so XTOUR does not publish anything about the island beyond what the listing says.

How to choose

• For the lake swim, XTOUR's reading is that the choice is between the Langkawi Dayang Bunting Island Jet Ski Tour and the Langkawi Southern Island Geopark Boat Tour; the speedboat tour only photographs the island.
• Age rules differ by jet ski tour: the Tuba Island tour takes no one under 16, while the Makan Makan and short island hopping tours take children from 5 riding with an adult.[3][6][5]
• Where you start matters more than it looks. The jet ski tours meet on Pantai Cenang, the speedboat picks up only in Pantai Cenang and Pantai Tengah, the Southern Island Geopark boat meets in Kuah, and Crystal Yacht leaves from Resorts World Langkawi.[10][11][1][3]
• For an evening at sea, the Premium Sunset Dinner Cruise options are the only dinner cruises here.[7]
• The ferry is transport to Thailand, not a sightseeing trip, and it runs only in its season.[8]

Before you book

• Mega Water Sports' jet ski listings set a maximum combined weight of 180 kg per jet ski and require an indemnity form, signed by a parent or guardian for minors.[5][4]
• The Dayang Bunting jet ski listing asks you to bring sunscreen, sunglasses with a strap, swimwear, a change of clothes, extra cash and bottled water.[4]
• On the Southern Island Geopark tour, bring cash for the lake admission add-on.[2]
