Penang Hill, spice garden, parks and island tours

The short answer

These nine products fall into three groups. The Habitat Penang Hill Ticket covers the rainforest park at the top of Penang Hill, and its operator sells the funicular that takes you up separately.[2] Four tickets cover single venues: the spice garden (with a separate cooking class), Entopia and ESCAPE, which SkyGate lists at addresses on Jalan Teluk Bahang, and Penang Bird Park on the mainland.[14][11][9][5] Three tours collect you from selected Penang Island hotels and follow set itineraries, and SkyGate's listings show they differ most in whether the funicular and admissions are included.[18][17][16]

Penang Hill: The Habitat and the funicular

The Habitat Penang Hill Ticket has one option, a Standard Entrance Pass, and SkyGate lists admission as the only inclusion.[1] The operator is explicit that funicular train tickets are sold separately from its entrance passes. It gives two ways up, the funicular from the Lower Station in Air Itam or a hike, and says the park entrance is a five-minute walk from the Upper Station.[2]

Inside, SkyGate's listing describes a 1.6 km trail, the Curtis Crest Tree Top Walk and the Langur Way Canopy Walk.[1] The operator calls the park a gateway to the Penang Hill Biosphere Reserve, which UNESCO lists under its Man and the Biosphere Programme.[4] The operator gives general admission as 9:00am to 5:30pm with exit by 7:00pm, and sells a separate Evening Walk after 5:30pm.[2] SkyGate's page still carries a notice that The Habitat closed while the funicular was under maintenance from 8 to 14 June 2026.[1] The Penang Hill Corporation says the funicular shuts for bi-annual scheduled maintenance, so check its notices before a hill day.[3] See The Habitat Penang Hill and Penang Hill pages on XTOUR for the venues.

Tropical Spice Garden: three ways in

The Tropical Spice Garden Penang Ticket has three options: Admission with Audio Guide, Admission with Expert Guide, and Cooking Class at Tropical Spice Garden.[5] The Cooking Class at Tropical Spice Garden is also sold as its own product with that single option, so you can reach the class from either page.[6]

For the class, SkyGate lists admission, lunch, an instructor and a local expert guide, and says the class includes a live-guided garden tour. Children under 8 are not permitted; children aged 8 to 14 share a workstation with a parent or guardian, according to the same listing.[6] The operator describes individual workstations at its Cooking School.[8]

The two sources differ on weekday hours. The operator gives Friday to Sunday 9am to 6pm and Monday to Thursday 9am to 4.30pm, with guided walks daily at 9am and 11am.[7] SkyGate's listing gives Monday to Thursday as 9:00 AM to 4:00 PM. SkyGate also advises comfortable walking shoes because of inclines and uneven terrain in parts of the garden.[5]

Entopia, ESCAPE and Penang Bird Park

The Entopia by Penang Butterfly Farm Ticket has three options: Admission for International Travellers, Admission for Malaysian Citizens, and Entopia by Night - Admission.[9] The operator runs Entopia by Night from 7:00pm to 10:00pm, Thursday to Sunday, with tickets by advance online booking only.[10] SkyGate's listing says guests with disabilities are admitted free on presenting a valid OKU ID.[9]

The ESCAPE Penang Ticket is a single 1-Day Pass.[11] The operator uses facial-recognition ticketing: every visitor registers a selfie through an emailed link before arriving and scans their face at the turnstile.[12] SkyGate's listing describes more than 40 activities including water slides, zip lining and rope climbing.[11] The operator gives its address as 828 Jalan Teluk Bahang and its hours as 10am to 6pm daily.[12]

Penang Bird Park is the odd one out geographically. The operator places its five-acre park on the mainland portion of Penang State.[14] OpenStreetMap maps it on Jalan Todak, Seberang Jaya.[15] SkyGate lists an animal show as well as admission in the price, with options for International Travellers and Malaysian Citizens. SkyGate's page gives no show times and asks visitors to check the show schedule before going.[13]

Three island tours, three different routes

The Penang Hill and Kek Lok Si Temple Tour has a Morning Tour and an Afternoon Tour option, with pickup from selected Penang Island hotels. It visits Kek Lok Si Temple, then Penang Hill, and the itinerary says the funicular ride is at your own expense. The price covers a driver guide and shared round-trip transfers, and admission is listed as excluded.[16] Kek Lok Si is a Buddhist temple complex at Ayer Itam that its own site says has been built since 1891.[19]

The Penang Grand Island Full-Day Tour has one option and the longest list: a drive along Batu Ferringhi, the Penang Batik Factory, the Snake Temple, Kek Lok Si Temple, the funicular up Penang Hill and the Harriston Chocolate Factory, with lunch at your own expense. Its price lists shared transfers, a driver guide and a Local Train. The same listing says admission to the Kek Lok Si incline lift, the Snake Farm inside the Snake Temple and the Harriston chocolate workshop is not included and can be bought on site.[17]

Both of those tours carry the same note: if the funicular is under maintenance, the Penang Botanical Gardens replace it.[17][16] Neither lists The Habitat as a stop.

The Penang Round Island Tour names none of the other places in this guide. Its itinerary is a drive along Batu Ferringhi, the Penang Batik Factory, a local fruit and spice stall, the Snake Temple, a view of the Penang Bridge and a stop at the Penang Peranakan Museum, and it says the route varies by option. Admission is listed as excluded, and under-17s must be with a paying adult aged 18 or over.[18]

How to choose

• For the rainforest canopy walks on the hill, The Habitat Penang Hill Ticket, plus a funicular ticket bought separately.
• For Penang Hill and Kek Lok Si with transport handled, the Penang Hill and Kek Lok Si Temple Tour; add the funicular fare yourself.
• For a full day that includes the funicular fare, the Penang Grand Island Full-Day Tour; budget for the extras it names.
• For batik, the Snake Temple and the Peranakan Museum without the hill, the Penang Round Island Tour.
• For a guided or audio-guided garden visit, or a cooking class, the Tropical Spice Garden products; for butterflies, Entopia; for active outdoor play, ESCAPE; for birds, Penang Bird Park on the mainland.
