History Museum of Armenia

Հայաստանի պատմության թանգարան

Armenia's state history museum on Republic Square in Yerevan, founded by parliament in 1919 and holding about 400,000 objects from prehistory to the present, in a complex shared with the National Gallery.

Why go

The permanent halls run in sequence from the Stone Age through the Bronze and Iron Ages, Urartu and classical antiquity to the Christian Middle Ages and modern times. Look for the wooden carts from Lchashen, dated to the fifteenth and fourteenth centuries BC, and for the Urartian material, which is worth seeing before a trip to Erebuni. Coins account for nearly half the collection. The National Gallery shares the building complex but is a separate museum with its own collection, so plan time for each.
