National Gallery of Armenia

Հայաստանի ազգային պատկերասրահ

Armenia's national art museum on Republic Square, founded in 1921 and housed in a seven-storey block completed in 1980 in the courtyard of the complex it shares with the History Museum.

Why go

The Armenian collection is the core, running from copies of Urartian frescoes, the Garni mosaics and medieval wall paintings to painters such as Vardges Sureniants and Martiros Saryan, who was the gallery's first director. There are 62 canvases by the marine painter Ivan Aivazovsky, and the Russian and Western European rooms include works by Tintoretto, Donatello, Chagall and Kandinsky. With 56 halls, it pays to pick a few sections rather than trying to see everything at once.
