Why go
The Matenadaran is a working research institute first, so what visitors see in the museum is a selection from a collection of about 20,000 manuscripts. The collection was entered on UNESCO's Memory of the World register in 1997, a documentary-heritage programme separate from the World Heritage List. The original building is by the architect Mark Grigoryan, and a new research building designed by Arthur Meschyan opened beside it in 2011 as the collection grew. It suits anyone interested in the Armenian script, book art or medieval scholarship.
