Mother Armenia Monument

Մայր Հայաստան հուշահամալիր · Mother Armenia

The 22-metre copper statue of a woman holding a sheathed sword, raised in 1967 in Victory Park on high ground above central Yerevan, on a pedestal first built for a statue of Stalin.

Why go

Sculptor Ara Harutyunyan's figure replaced the Stalin statue that stood here from 1950 until 1962; architect Rafael Israelyan's pedestal is faced in polished black tuff, with carved roses around the entrance arch. Inside the pedestal is a military museum, opened in 1970 and devoted to Armenia's military history. The figure can be seen from many parts of the city, and a visit combines the statue, the museum and the surrounding Victory Park.
