Antalya is a Mediterranean port city whose old harbour town, Kaleiçi, was founded as Attaleia by Attalos II of Pergamon and is entered through a marble gate built in AD 130 for the emperor Hadrian. It is the base for the Konyaaltı and Lara beach strips and for separate road trips to the ancient cities of Perge, Aspendos, Side, Termessos and Phaselis.

Planning your visit
The Turkish State Meteorological Service's long-run statistics for Antalya (data range 1930–2025) show a hot, almost rainless summer and a mild, wet winter. July and August average daily highs of 34.2°C and 34.1°C, the station has recorded 45.0°C in July, and each of those months averages about half a rainy day and under 5 mm of rain. June (average high 30.8°C) and September (31.2°C) are already hot. April, May and October are the months where average highs sit between 21.4°C and 26.6°C and rain is well below winter levels: 6.4, 5.2 and 5.4 rainy days, against 12.4 in January and 11.9 in December. Winter is mild rather than cold, with average highs of 15.0–16.7°C from December to February, but it is the wet season: December averages 250.9 mm and January 225.5 mm. Sunshine falls from 11.7 hours a day in July to 4.8 in December. Two seasonal limits are officially sourced: the municipal Lara public beach lists an operating season of 15 May to 30 September, and the UK FCDO warns that wildfires happen frequently in Turkey in summer, with a high risk from April to October. Sea temperatures could not be retrieved from a primary source and are not stated.
No official source prescribes a length of stay, so this is planning arithmetic from sourced figures rather than an authority's recommendation. The city sights cluster in two places: Kaleiçi, where the municipality's own catalogue runs to dozens of monuments along streets such as Hesapçı Sokak, and the Konyaaltı coast, where the aquarium alone takes one to two hours and three to five with its extras. Every ancient site is a separate outing: Perge (18 km) and Aspendos (48 km) both lie east of the city, Termessos is off the Antalya–Korkuteli highway, Phaselis and Olympos are on the Antalya–Kumluca road beyond Kemer, and Side is beyond Manavgat (65 km from the airport). Perge and Aspendos share a direction, so combining them is realistic; Termessos and Phaselis lie on different roads.
Three areas are documented. Kaleiçi: the Ministry's culture portal calls it Antalya's heart and main tourist attraction and lists restaurants, cafes, hotels, pensions and shops inside the old town, with Hadrian's Gate, the Yivli Minare complex and the harbour on the doorstep. Konyaaltı: the aquarium operator places its building 70 m from Konyaaltı Beach, which the municipality describes as about 7 km of fine pebbles with numerous private operations alongside public access. Lara: GoTürkiye lists Lara among the province's resort areas, and the public municipal beach there lies 15 km from the city centre and about 10 km from the airport according to the Blue Flag database. Belek, Kemer, Beldibi, Göynük and Kiriş are separate resort areas outside the city (GoTürkiye), and Land of Legends is in Kadriye, Serik district, not in Antalya city. The airport is 13 km from the centre (DHMİ).
On 21 September 2026 the Ministry's museum listing showed the Antalya Museum as closed to visits with no reopening date, and its Perge page said the ancient theatre was temporarily closed while restoration was under way. Aspendos's night-museum session was cancelled on six September dates. Read the muze.gov.tr page for the site immediately before planning around it.
The company's 2026 schedule, read on 20 September 2026, listed its Antalya performances at the Aspendos ancient theatre on 4, 8, 16, 22 and 29 September, with no later Antalya date and no 2027 Antalya season published. The show ticket and the Ministry's site admission are separate products.
The operator sets a height, age and supervision rule per ride, for example 130 cm for the Hyper Coaster and 120 cm plus parental supervision for the Family Coaster, and states that park wristbands are non-refundable and non-cancellable. Measure children and read the ride pages before buying.

The municipality traces Kaleiçi to a small Hellenistic settlement that became Attaleia when Attalos II of Pergamon took the region; its monument page dates the founding to 158 BC and catalogues dozens of numbered monuments from the Hellenistic, Roman, Byzantine, Seljuk and Ottoman periods, among them Hadrian's Gate, Hıdırlık Tower, the Yivli Minare complex, the Karatay Madrasa (1250), the Clock Tower (1921) and the Tekeli Mehmet Paşa Mosque (1606–1617). Hesapçı Sokak, which runs from Hadrian's Gate to Hıdırlık Tower, follows the line of Attaleia's ancient main street, and Roman road remains were found beside it. The Ministry's culture portal describes two- and three-storey traditional houses on narrow lanes running down to the ancient harbour, now a yacht marina. Kaleiçi is not a UNESCO site: in August 2024 the Antalya Governorate reported that the Ministry had begun work toward putting it on the World Heritage Tentative List.
A gate of white marble, apart from its columns, with three openings, built in AD 130 in the name of the emperor Hadrian, whose visit the Governorate credits with prompting the city's development. The original design was two storeys and the upper storey has not survived. Two towers flank it: the southern one is called the Julia Sancta Tower and dates from Hadrian's period, while the northern one keeps ancient lower courses under Seljuk upper sections. A later city wall enclosed the outer face and the gate went unused for many years until the wall's remains were demolished in 1882. GoTürkiye lists entering Kaleiçi through it, and the Governorate reported a three-stage conservation plan for it in August 2024.
The fluted brick minaret, 38 m high with 90 steps up to its balcony and decorated with blue tile, is the city's best-known landmark. The Ministry's heritage directory dates the mosque to 1230 under the Anatolian Seljuk sultan I. Alaaddin Keykubad, says it has six domes and calls it the oldest surviving multi-domed mosque type in Anatolia, and lists it as 'Yivli Minare Camii (Antalya) [2016]' in its Tentative List directory; it is not an inscribed World Heritage property. The complex includes the Mevlevihane, built in 1225 according to the municipality, which the Ministry's culture portal presents as a museum together with a hamam and two tombs. Museum opening hours were not retrieved.
The municipality records that the building stands within what was the city agora in the Hellenistic and Roman periods, that an Early Byzantine church, the Panhagia, was built inside it and from the Middle Byzantine period was the most sacred place in Pamphylia, and that the church was converted to a mosque in the time of Şehzade Korkut. The municipality says a fire in 1895 damaged the building, which is why it is called the Kesik (cut or truncated) Minare.
The municipality describes Konyaaltı as one of Turkey's best-known beaches, about 7 km of coast with fine pebbles, numerous private operations alongside public access, and facilities for a full day by the sea, and lists it among Antalya's Blue Flag beaches. Antalya Aquarium stands 70 m from it according to the aquarium operator, and the Ministry's Antalya Museum is on Konyaaltı Caddesi.
The Blue Flag database lists the municipality's Lara Halk Plajı 1 as a sandy public beach that has held a Blue Flag in every year from 2011 to 2025 except 2018, with 24-hour camera surveillance, an operating season of 15 May to 30 September, and cultural and sports programming. The database places it about 10 km from the airport and 15 km from the city centre.
Food & drink
Antalya's most distinctive dishes are protected or promoted by name. Antalya piyazı, a bean dish dressed with a tahini tarator sauce and eaten as a main course rather than as a salad, is registered as a geographical indication (No. 315, in 2017 according to GoTürkiye), and the Antalya Chamber of Commerce and Industry has also obtained registrations for Antalya pumpkin dessert, serpme börek and turunç (bitter orange) and bergamot peel jams. Şiş köfte, skewered meatballs made from minced meat and salt alone and grilled over charcoal, is presented by GoTürkiye as the natural partner of tahinli piyaz. The Provincial Culture and Tourism Directorate's list of traditional dishes adds the upland side of the cooking: Yörük kebabı, kid goat in a clay pot, several tarhana soups and milk-based soups. The coast contributes citrus (GoTürkiye says about 23% of Turkey's orange production is in Antalya, and Finike oranges are a registered geographical indication) and fish baked in a salt crust.
White beans, historically the small çandır bean, served on a plate under a tarator sauce of tahini, garlic, lemon juice, vinegar and olive oil, topped with tomato, parsley and optionally egg. The Ministry's culture portal says it differs from piyaz elsewhere because it is eaten as a main dish and dressed with tarator; it holds geographical-indication registration No. 315, of the 'mahreç işareti' (place-of-origin) type.
Skewered meatballs in which salt is the only ingredient besides minced meat, cooked over a charcoal fire. GoTürkiye recommends eating them with tahinli piyaz.
A meze of tahini beaten with garlic, cumin, hot red pepper, salt and lemon juice, loosened with water to a boza-like consistency and served with hot pepper fried in olive oil, according to the Antalya Governorate's recipe. The Provincial Directorate lists it among Antalya's traditional dishes.
Cubed lamb or kid simmered with pearl onions, courgette, carrot, potato, green beans and cooked noodles, with butter and olive oil, in the Culture Portal's recipe. GoTürkiye says it is made with plenty of meat and vegetables and highland spices, reflecting nomadic pastoral traditions.
Listed by name among Antalya's traditional dishes by the Provincial Culture and Tourism Directorate and by ATSO; the name describes kid goat cooked tandır-style in a clay pot (güveç). No recipe was read, so no method is stated.
GoTürkiye describes a white-fleshed Mediterranean fish, lagos, cooked in a crust made from rock salt, eggs and a little soda.
Safety & tourist traps
The UK Foreign Office (page updated 18 September 2026) advises against travel only within 10 km of the Syrian border, which is nowhere near Antalya, and its Turkey-wide safety page says terrorists are likely to try to carry out attacks in Turkey, with targets that have included public buildings, places of worship, airports and large gatherings. It does not name Antalya in the pages read. The risks it names that matter on this coast are summer wildfires, which happen frequently, with fines or prison for lighting a fire or discarding cigarettes in risk areas and possible instructions from local authorities to leave accommodation; road travel, where it asks for care particularly at night; drink spiking and illegally produced spirits; and, across Turkey, 29 cases of sexual assault, including rape, reported among 4.27 million British visitors in 2025. Check your own government's current advice, because advisories change.

Carpets from Döşemealtı, about 20 km north of Antalya according to the culture portal, woven of sheep wool with natural dyes in the Turkish (Gördes) knot on a loom called an ıstar, in some sixteen named design groups. Döşemealtı El Halısı is registered as a geographical indication (No. 796, mahreç işareti) in the TÜRKPATENT registry.
Both are registered geographical indications for Antalya on the Chamber of Commerce's application, and the Chamber calls the turunç jam one of the most important riches of Antalya gastronomy.
Money & costs
Ministry museum pages quote prices in Turkish lira; the Aspendos page, for example, lists a night-museum supplement of 200 TL for Turkish MuseumCard holders. Antalya's public buses and AntRay tram accept AntalyaKart and contactless bank cards, according to Antalya Ulaşım A.Ş. Inside Land of Legends, food, drink and paid extras are charged to the balance loaded on the wristband, and outside food and drink are prohibited. No fares, admission prices or budget figures with a dated primary source were found, so none are stated here.
Transport
The municipal system runs buses and the AntRay tram, and Antalya Ulaşım A.Ş. states that AntalyaKart and contactless bank cards are accepted; its call centre is 0242 606 07 07. The airport's site calls AntRay the fastest connection between the intercity bus terminal and the city centre. Inside Kaleiçi, the municipality says Hesapçı Sokak, which follows the line of Attaleia's ancient main street, runs from Hadrian's Gate to Hıdırlık Tower. For the ancient sites the official sources describe a mix: Aksu minibuses to Perge, buses from the intercity terminal to Aspendos, Side and Manavgat, buses to Kemer–Tekirova for Phaselis, and for Termessos a minibus to Korkuteli followed by a taxi. Fares, timetables and step-free access on the network were not found in the pages read.
Accessibility
Published accessibility information for Antalya is patchy and attaches to individual venues rather than to the city's streets. What is documented: Antalya Aquarium offers complimentary wheelchairs and disabled parking, though its route includes a stair descent before the tunnel; Land of Legends lends free wheelchairs from the Information Desk and requires disabled guests to visit with a companion aged 18 or over, and staff may help with boarding but will not lift anyone; the municipal Lara public beach lists disabled-accessible restrooms, ramps, lounge chairs, umbrellas and floating loungers; and the Governorate reported an accessible-beach pier at Konyaaltı in 2017. Not documented in the sources read: paving and gradients in Kaleiçi, step-free access at any of the ancient sites, the accessibility of AntRay stops and buses, and any accessible-transport service. Perge's theatre was closed for restoration and the Antalya Museum was closed to visits on 21 September 2026.
Wheelchair access
Antalya Aquarium: complimentary wheelchairs, first come first served with no reservations, and disabled parking; a lift and step-free access to the terrace floor are not confirmed. Land of Legends: free wheelchairs from the Information Desk, some specially designed for certain activities, but ride boarding is decided by staff after a visual check. Lara public beach: ramps and disabled-accessible restrooms are listed in the Blue Flag database. No official statement on step-free access was found for Kaleiçi or the ancient sites.
Family travel
Documented family information is concentrated in three operators. Antalya Aquarium, in Konyaaltı, is indoors and the operator says pushchairs can be used in the aquarium; Land of Legends in Kadriye sets height and supervision rules ride by ride and offers no stroller service; and the municipal Lara public beach and Toy Museum are the municipality's own family venues. The operators' age and height limits, not the ticket, decide what a child can do.
What visitors get wrong
UNESCO's World Heritage List dataset showed no inscribed property at Antalya city, Perge, Aspendos, Side, Termessos, Phaselis or Olympos when checked on 21 September 2026; the one Antalya-province record is Xanthos-Letoon, inscribed in 1988. The Ministry says Perge (2009), Güllük Dağı–Termessos National Park (2000) and the theatre and aqueducts of Aspendos (2015) are on Turkey's Tentative List, which is a declared intention to nominate, not an inscription. Kaleiçi as a whole is not on the list: in August 2024 the Governorate reported that the Ministry was starting work toward it.
