Lake Sevan

The high-altitude lake east over the plateau, with the Sevanavank monastery on its peninsula. Tsaghkadzor and Sevan are commonly combined in a single day from Yerevan, and the two work well together because the landscapes are so different.

Getting there: Taxi or driver is the practical option; there is no direct public transport between the two and connections via Hrazdan are slow.

Dilijan and the Tavush forest

The forested mountain town north over the Sevan pass, with a restored nineteenth-century street and the monasteries of Haghartsin and Goshavank. A complete change of landscape from Tsaghkadzor's open slopes.

Getting there: Requires a car or driver; the route runs via Sevan and there is no useful direct public transport.

Hrazdan and the Kotayk plateau

The regional town below Tsaghkadzor, an industrial centre with Soviet-era architecture and a large power station, set on the open Kotayk plateau. Not a conventional sight, but the most convenient window on ordinary post-Soviet provincial Armenia from the resort.

Getting there: Marshrutkas run frequently between Hrazdan and Tsaghkadzor, and this is the main public transport link serving the resort.

Garni and Geghard

The colonnaded first-century temple at Garni above the Azat gorge and the partly rock-cut monastery at Geghard, the most-visited excursion in Armenia. From Tsaghkadzor they are reachable across the Kotayk plateau without returning to Yerevan.

Getting there: Requires a car or driver. There is no useful public transport on this cross-country route; travellers without a vehicle generally do these from Yerevan instead.
