Ski resort

Tsaghkadzor ski area

The country's principal ski area, rising on the slopes of Mount Teghenis from a base around 1,966 metres to a top station near 2,819 metres, a vertical of roughly 850 metres. It is served by a multi-stage Leitner ropeway system installed in the mid-2000s along with around seven lifts in total, including rope tows on the lower beginner terrain. The area is modest by Alpine standards but well suited to beginners and intermediates, and the runs through the upper stages have genuinely good views towards Lake Sevan and Mount Aragats.

Booking: Confirm current lift operation, pass pricing and which stages are running before travelling, as these vary with conditions. Equipment rental is available in the town and at the base; quality varies, so inspect before accepting.

Accessibility: The base area and lower stations are the most manageable part of the resort. Upper stations involve steps and snow underfoot in season.

Aerial lift

Tsaghkadzor ropeway

The multi-stage gondola that serves the ski area in winter also operates outside the season, carrying walkers and sightseers up Teghenis for panoramic views over the Kotayk plateau, towards Aragats and, in clear weather, across to the mountains around Sevan. In summer it is the single most rewarding thing to do here.

Booking: Summer operating days and hours are more limited than in winter and subject to maintenance closures and weather. Verify before making a special trip. It is noticeably colder at the top than the base in any season.

Accessibility: Boarding at the base station is relatively straightforward and this is among the more accessible mountain experiences in Armenia, though upper stations have steps and uneven ground beyond the platforms.

Monastery

Kecharis Monastery

A monastic ensemble in the centre of the town, founded in 1033 by Grigor Magistros Pahlavuni and built up through the eleventh to thirteenth centuries. Four churches and a gavit stand in a compact group of grey stone, and the complex was an important medieval religious and educational centre. It sits within the town rather than isolated on a hillside, which makes it unusually easy to visit.

Booking: Free to enter and walkable from the town centre. Active religious site; dress modestly.

Accessibility: The grounds are broadly level with gravel and paving underfoot, making this one of the more approachable monasteries in Armenia, though there are thresholds and steps into the churches.

Soviet-era sports facility

Tsaghkadzor Olympic Sports Complex

Opened in 1967 through the efforts of the Soviet-Armenian gymnast and Olympic champion Hrant Shahinyan, the complex was built as a high-altitude training base for Soviet Olympic teams, who used the elevation to prepare for the 1968 Mexico City Games. It explains why a small mountain town carries sports infrastructure on this scale, and parts of it remain in use for training and accommodation. It is a genuine piece of Soviet sporting history hiding in plain sight.

Booking: This is a working facility rather than a museum, so interior access is not generally available. Approach it as architectural and historical context rather than an attraction with a ticket.

Accessibility: External areas involve slopes and steps typical of the period's construction.

Hiking and forest trails

Forest walking on Teghenis

The slopes below and around the ski area carry mixed forest and open meadow, with walking routes ranging from short strolls near the town to longer climbs towards the ridge. Wildflowers in early summer are notable, and the air is markedly cooler and fresher than the plain below.

Booking: Trails are less formally waymarked than in Dilijan National Park. Taking the ropeway up and walking down is the easiest way to structure a walk. Weather on the ridge changes faster than at the base.

Accessibility: Natural surfaces throughout, frequently steep and uneven. No step-free trail infrastructure.
