Where to go beyond Gyumri

Some of the best experiences may sit outside the destination itself. Compare distance, time and whether each trip deserves a few hours or a full day.

01

Marmashen Monastery

A tenth- to eleventh-century monastic complex of red tuff standing above the Akhurian river gorge northwest of the city, with several churches in a green riverside setting. It is close, quiet and among the most attractive monastery settings in northern Armenia.

Getting there: Taxi from Gyumri is the practical option; there is no useful public transport. Easily combined with a stop in the surrounding villages.

Distance

About 12 km northwest

Travel time

20–25 minutes each way

Allow

Half day

Best season

April to October; the river setting is at its best in spring and early summer.

02

Harichavank

A monastery complex east of Gyumri with foundations reaching back to the seventh century, expanded in the medieval period and used as a summer residence by Armenian church leaders. Substantial, less visited than the famous southern monasteries, and set in open Shirak countryside.

Getting there: Taxi or driver. Can be combined with the drive between Gyumri and the Yerevan road.

Distance

About 40 km east

Travel time

About 45 minutes each way

Allow

Half day

Best season

April to October.

03

Mount Aragats and Byurakan

Armenia's highest mountain lies southeast of Gyumri, with the Byurakan Astrophysical Observatory and the ruined fortress of Amberd on its slopes. The observatory was one of the Soviet Union's principal astronomy centres and hosted an early international conference on communicating with extraterrestrial intelligence in 1971.

Getting there: Requires a car or driver. The mountain road to Amberd and the alpine lake is seasonal and typically closed by snow well into spring; confirm access before travelling. Observatory visits should be arranged in advance.

Distance

About 70 km southeast

Travel time

About 1.5 hours each way

Allow

Full day

Best season

Late June to October, once the mountain road is reliably clear.

04

Shirak villages and the Akhurian valley

The countryside around Gyumri is open, high and treeless, dotted with villages, old churches and Soviet agricultural infrastructure. It is not a sightseeing circuit so much as a way to see a part of Armenia that few visitors reach.

Getting there: Car or driver. Note that the border with Turkey runs along the Akhurian river west of the city and is closed; do not approach or photograph border infrastructure.

Distance

Within 30 km of the city

Travel time

Variable

Allow

Half day

Best season

May to October. The plain is bleak and exposed in winter.
