Where to stay in Gyumri
The right neighborhood can matter more than the right hotel. Compare atmosphere, location and who each area suits.

Kumayri historic district
The protected nineteenth-century core, with over a thousand black and red tuff buildings along streets such as Rustaveli, Abovyan and Gorky. Merchant houses, carved doors, iron balconies, small museums, craft workshops and the best cafes and restaurants. Condition varies from beautifully restored to visibly neglected, which is part of its character.

The best base by a clear margin. Restored merchant houses operate as guesthouses. Pavements are poor, so pack accordingly.

Vartanants Square and the central axis
The civic centre, with the two main churches, the city hall, monuments and the larger hotels. More formal and more open than Kumayri, and the point where most visitors first orient themselves.
Practical and central, with the flattest walking in the city. Less atmospheric than staying inside the historic district but easier underfoot.

Outer Soviet districts
The residential districts built around and after the Soviet period, including areas substantially rebuilt following the 1988 earthquake. Ordinary apartment neighbourhoods with local shops and everyday life, of interest mainly for understanding how the city functions today.
