Getting around Gyumri
Gyumri's centre is walkable and walking is how the city should be seen, since its architecture is the attraction and it reveals itself street by street. The historic district and Vartanants Square are within easy walking distance of each other, and the Black Fortress and Mother Armenia viewpoint are a longer walk uphill or a short taxi ride. The main caveat is surface quality: pavements are frequently broken and uneven, and this is a genuine consideration rather than a minor grumble. Local buses and marshrutkas cover the wider city cheaply but are of little use to visitors staying centrally. Taxis are inexpensive and easily arranged through accommodation; ride-hailing coverage exists but is less comprehensive than in Yerevan. Getting here, the train from Yerevan takes roughly two to three hours through open Shirak landscape and is the most pleasant option, though services are limited in number and schedules should be checked in advance; marshrutkas run more frequently and take a similar time. Sites outside the city need a taxi or driver.
Problems worth knowing
Train services are infrequent
The Yerevan–Gyumri railway is enjoyable but runs only a small number of services a day, and timings do not always suit a day trip in both directions. Check current schedules before planning around the train, and consider taking it one way and a marshrutka the other.
Pavement condition is a real constraint
Broken paving and high kerbs throughout the historic district cause more problems for visitors than any other practical issue in the city, especially after dark or in ice.
Museums close on set days
Several of the city's museums close one or more days a week. A day trip landing on the wrong day sees only the streets, which is still worthwhile but not the full picture.
Outlying monasteries need a taxi
Marmashen and Harichavank have no useful public transport. Budget for a taxi with waiting time rather than expecting to reach them independently.
Winter conditions are more severe than Yerevan
Gyumri is significantly colder and snowier than the capital, and road and pavement conditions reflect that from December to March.
