When to visit Gyumri
Gyumri sits at roughly 1,550 metres on the open Shirak plateau, higher and further north than Yerevan and without the shelter the capital enjoys, which makes it one of the coldest inhabited cities in Armenia. Winters are long and severe, with sustained temperatures well below freezing, regular snow cover from December to March and a wind that crosses the treeless plain unobstructed. Summers are warm rather than hot — noticeably more comfortable than Yerevan's heat, typically in the mid to high twenties — with cool evenings even in July. Spring arrives late and is changeable, and autumn is short, clear and among the best times to be here. The absence of shelter on the plateau means wind is a factor in every season, and the temperature difference from Yerevan is consistently significant enough to affect what you pack.
Best time
May to early October offers the most comfortable conditions for walking a city whose main attraction is its streets. September is arguably the best month: warm days, cool evenings and clear light on the dark stone. Gyumri sits higher and further north than Yerevan and is markedly colder, so winter is genuinely severe — but it is also when the black tuff facades look their most dramatic against snow, and the city is at its most atmospheric if you are prepared for the temperature.
