Noratus and Hayravank

The great khachkar field at Noratus paired with the small clifftop monastery of Hayravank on the western shore. Together they make the best half day at the lake and are far quieter than the peninsula.

Getting there: A taxi or car is the practical option; both sites sit on or just off the western shore road and combine naturally. Public transport towards Gavar passes nearby but leaves a walk and awkward return timing.

Year-round. There is no shade at Noratus, so early morning or late afternoon is better in summer.

Dilijan and the Tavush forest

Over the pass to the north, the landscape changes from open high plateau to dense forest within a few kilometres. Dilijan's restored old street and the monasteries of Haghartsin and Goshavank make a full day, or a natural next stop.

Getting there: Marshrutkas running between Yerevan and Dilijan pass Sevan. Most travellers treat this as an onward move rather than a return trip, which is the better use of the road.

Tsaghkadzor

The mountain resort west of the lake, with the Kecharis monastery in the town and a ropeway up Mount Teghenis. Armenia's ski centre in winter and a cool-air escape in summer.

Getting there: Straightforward by car or taxi via Hrazdan. The two are commonly combined in a single day from Yerevan.

Yerevan

The capital is close enough that Sevan works as a base for a city day if you have a car, though almost everyone travels in the other direction.

Getting there: Frequent marshrutkas run between Sevan and Yerevan along the main highway. This is the busiest transport link in the region.
