The lake is cold, deep and genuinely dangerous to underestimate: water temperatures reach only around 20–22°C at the height of summer and drop sharply below the surface, wind can rise quickly and turn the lake choppy within minutes, and most of the shoreline has no lifeguard cover. Cold-water shock is the practical hazard, not currents. The altitude of roughly 1,900 metres also means sun exposure is stronger than the air temperature suggests, and evenings turn cold even after a hot day.
