Getting around Sevan
Sevan is not a walkable destination in the way a town is: the lake is large, the sights are spread along tens of kilometres of shore, and the town sits away from the water. Sevanavank is three to four kilometres from the bus station, which is a ten-minute taxi ride or a forty-minute walk along the lakeside. Everything else — Noratus, Hayravank, the eastern shore — needs a vehicle. Marshrutkas run frequently between Yerevan and Sevan along the main highway and continue north to Dilijan, which makes arriving and leaving easy, but local transport around the lake is slow and infrequent and will not build a useful day. Taxis are arranged through accommodation rather than apps, and a half-day hire covering Noratus and Hayravank with waiting time is the standard approach. Driving is straightforward on the main roads; the eastern shore roads are rougher. Cycling the shore is possible but the wind is a genuine factor and there are no dedicated lanes.
Problems worth knowing
Sevan town is not on the lake
Travellers arriving by marshrutka and expecting to step off at the water are consistently surprised. The town is set back and the shore requires a taxi or a walk of several kilometres.
Noratus needs a car or taxi
The khachkar field is not served by useful public transport. Services towards Gavar pass nearby but leave a walk and unreliable return timing.
Circling the lake takes longer than the map suggests
The full circuit is well over 200 km on roads of variable quality, and the eastern side is slow. Do not plan it as a casual half day.
Afternoon return services thin out
Marshrutkas back to Yerevan reduce through the afternoon. Confirm the last realistic departure before committing to a late lunch on the shore.
Wind affects boats, not just swimmers
Boat trips and water activities are frequently cancelled at short notice when the wind rises, which happens often and quickly. Treat any water activity as weather-dependent.
