Garni Temple and Geghard Monastery
The most-visited day trip from Yerevan and the one most worth doing. Garni is a colonnaded first-century temple in the Greco-Roman style, rebuilt in the twentieth century after an earthquake, standing above the Azat gorge. Geghard is a partly rock-cut monastery carved directly into the cliff, with chambers hewn from solid stone and exceptional acoustics. Below Garni, the basalt columns known as the Symphony of Stones are reachable on foot or by vehicle down into the gorge.
Getting there: Both are straightforward to reach with a hired driver or on an organised excursion. Independently, marshrutkas run to Garni from the Gai area for a few hundred dram and take roughly 40 minutes, but there is no reliable public transport onward to Geghard: from Garni or the village of Goght you will need a taxi for the final stretch, and it is normal to negotiate a wait-and-return fare. Confirm the return timing before setting out, because late-afternoon services back to Yerevan thin out.
