Yerevan is a low-crime city by regional and European standards, and violent crime against visitors is rare. Ordinary caution around crowded areas and nightlife is sufficient, and walking in the central districts after dark is normal for residents and visitors alike. The issues visitors actually encounter are commercial rather than criminal: inflated taxi fares, overpricing in the most visible tourist locations and counterfeit spirits. Separately, and importantly, Armenia's national travel advisories concern its eastern and southern borders, not the capital. Several governments advise against travel within a few kilometres of the closed border with Azerbaijan and on specific roads in the north-east, and some name areas east of Vardenis and east of Goris. None of that guidance applies to Yerevan or to the standard day trips from it. Because border conditions and advisory wording can change, check your own government's current advice before travelling rather than relying on any guide, including this one.

Drivers approaching arrivals at Zvartnots frequently quote fares well above the normal rate into the city. This is the single most commonly reported problem for arriving visitors.
How to avoid it
Book through a ride-hailing app, which shows the fare before you accept, or take the city bus. If you do take a rank taxi, agree the fare before getting in rather than after.

Restaurants directly facing Republic Square and a few other prominent spots are widely reported to charge substantially more than equivalent places a short walk away.
How to avoid it
Check prices before sitting down and be wary of menus without prices or with meat priced per 100 grams. Walking two or three streets off the square changes the price level noticeably.

Fake Armenian brandy is sold by street vendors, at market stalls and occasionally near tourist sites, sometimes in convincing packaging.
How to avoid it
Buy spirits only from established shops, producer outlets or the airport. Treat unusually cheap aged bottles as counterfeit.

Street money changers offering favourable rates may short-count or use rates that differ from those quoted.
How to avoid it
Use bank branches or licensed exchange offices, which are common in the centre and generally offer good rates. Count money before leaving the counter.

As in most cities, skimming devices are occasionally found on cash machines, particularly free-standing ones in tourist areas.
How to avoid it
Prefer ATMs inside bank branches, check the card slot for anything loose or protruding, and cover the keypad when entering a PIN.

Opportunistic theft occurs in the busiest settings: the weekend market, packed metro carriages and crowded areas around Republic Square at peak times.

Normal urban precautions are enough. Keep bags closed and in front of you in crowds.
