Civic square and architectural ensemble

Republic Square

The city's central square, designed by Alexander Tamanyan as the centrepiece of his 1920s master plan and completed over several decades. The surrounding buildings are faced in pink and cream tuff and are the clearest single demonstration of why Yerevan is called the pink city. The square's fountains run musical displays on summer evenings.

Booking: No booking required. Worth seeing once by day for the stonework and once after dark when the buildings are lit.

Accessibility: Flat, paved and step-free, and among the most accessible sights in the city.

Monumental stairway, sculpture garden and museum

The Cascade and Cafesjian Center for the Arts

A vast limestone stairway begun in 1980 as part of the Soviet-era plan to link the city centre with the Monument district above it. Its terraces hold contemporary sculpture, and internal escalators run alongside the exterior steps. From the upper terraces the city opens out and, in clear weather, Mount Ararat dominates the southern horizon.

Booking: Free to walk. Check current opening hours for the interior galleries and escalators separately from the outdoor terraces, which are accessible for longer.

Accessibility: The internal escalators make most of the height gain step-free during opening hours, which is unusual for a monument of this scale. Outside those hours the only option is the exterior stairs.

Manuscript repository and museum

Matenadaran

One of the world's largest collections of manuscripts, holding many thousands of Armenian codices alongside Arabic, Persian, Greek and other material. The exhibition covers illuminated gospels, medieval science and medicine, and the history of the Armenian alphabet. It is the single most important museum in the country for understanding Armenian intellectual history.

Booking: Check current opening days and hours before travelling; guided tours add substantially to the visit because much of the value is in the context rather than the objects alone.

Accessibility: The building is approached by a monumental external stairway. Confirm current step-free entry arrangements in advance if needed.

Memorial complex and museum

Tsitsernakaberd and the Armenian Genocide Museum-Institute

The national memorial to the victims of the Armenian Genocide, set on a hill west of the centre, with an underground museum documenting the events of 1915 and their aftermath. The memorial itself is a split stele and a circle of twelve slabs around an eternal flame. It is a place of national mourning rather than a conventional visitor attraction.

Booking: Check current opening days. Allow time for the walk between the memorial and the museum entrance, and treat the site as you would any active memorial.

Accessibility: The approach path and memorial platform are largely step-free, though the site is exposed with little shade.

National museum

History Museum of Armenia

The national collection on Republic Square, covering archaeology from the Palaeolithic through Urartian bronze work to the medieval and modern periods. Its prehistoric holdings are unusually strong, reflecting how much early material Armenian archaeology has produced.

Booking: Check current opening days and whether photography permits are required.

Accessibility: Located in the Republic Square ensemble; confirm lift access between floors if required.

Open-air craft and antiques market

Vernissage

A large open-air market near Republic Square, strongest at weekends, selling carpets and kilims, obsidian and silver jewellery, ceramics, wood carving including miniature khachkars, paintings, Soviet-era objects, instruments and general bric-a-brac. It is the most practical single place to see the range of Armenian craft in one visit.

Booking: Weekends are when the full market operates; weekdays are much reduced. Arrive earlier in the morning for the best selection. Bargaining is expected.

Accessibility: Flat and open, but crowded and with uneven stall layouts at busy times.

Historic quarter

Kond

The oldest surviving quarter of Yerevan, on a hillside just west of the centre, reached by steep lanes and narrow staircases. Yerevan has no conventional old town: Tamanyan's twentieth-century plan replaced most of the older city, and Kond is what remains of the earlier fabric. Expect stone houses in varying condition, courtyards, street art and everyday residential life rather than a restored heritage district.

Booking: Walk it as a self-guided detour from the centre. It is a lived-in neighbourhood, so photograph people and private courtyards with the same discretion you would anywhere residential.

Accessibility: Steep, uneven and heavy on stairs. Not suitable for wheelchairs or strollers, and difficult in ice or heavy rain.

Historic mosque

Blue Mosque

An eighteenth-century Persian mosque on Mesrop Mashtots Avenue, with a tiled dome, courtyard and garden. It is the principal surviving monument of Yerevan's long period under Persian rule and a useful corrective to the assumption that the city's built history is exclusively Armenian and Soviet.

Booking: An active place of worship with visiting hours that vary. Dress modestly and check current access before planning around it.

Accessibility: The courtyard is largely flat; interior access may involve thresholds and removing shoes.

Opera house and surrounding district

Armenian Opera and Ballet Theatre

Tamanyan's circular opera building anchors the square and park district between the centre and the Cascade. The surrounding streets, particularly around Swan Lake and the adjacent parks, are the densest concentration of cafes in the city and the practical centre of Yerevan's evening life.

Booking: Check the current season and programme directly with the theatre. The building and its square are worth seeing even without a performance.

Accessibility: The square and surrounding park are flat and step-free.

Covered produce market

GUM Market

The main covered food market, best known for dried fruit, nuts, sujukh, spices, cheeses, pickles and honey. Vendors offer samples freely and expect conversation. It is the clearest place to understand the Armenian preserving traditions that carry summer fruit through the winter.

Booking: Prices are generally negotiable and quoted per kilo. Ask before assuming a quoted price refers to the bag in front of you.

Accessibility: Flat, indoor and largely step-free, though aisles are narrow when busy.

Architecture

Soviet-modernist Yerevan

Yerevan holds an unusually coherent body of late-Soviet modernist architecture, distinguished by the use of local tuff, which gives buildings a warmth that concrete-era architecture elsewhere lacks. Notable examples across the city include the Cascade complex, sports and cultural buildings, metro stations and the residential districts north of the centre.

Booking: Best approached as a self-guided walking theme or with a specialist architecture guide. Many buildings remain in active use, so interiors are not always accessible.

Accessibility: Varies entirely by building; several key examples involve significant external stairs.

Public drinking fountains

Pulpulaks

Yerevan's public drinking fountains, known as pulpulaks, first appeared in the 1920s and now number in the many hundreds across the city. They deliver cold spring water continuously and are used constantly by residents. In practical terms they mean you can refill a bottle almost anywhere in the city centre, which materially changes how you plan a hot summer day.

Booking: Free and public. Carry a refillable bottle in summer rather than buying water repeatedly.

Accessibility: Most are kerbside and around a metre tall, so reachable from a seated position at many but not all locations.
