Tourist traps to recognize in Goris
Goris itself is a quiet, low-crime town and visitors report no particular problems there. The safety picture in southern Armenia does, however, require precision rather than generalisation, because Syunik is a large region and advisories apply to specific parts of it. Several governments advise against all travel within a few kilometres of the closed border with Azerbaijan, and the United States advisory specifically names areas east of Goris and south of Kapan. Goris town, the road to Halidzor, Tatev, Khndzoresk, Zorats Karer and the main highway north to Yerevan are not within those areas, and the standard visitor circuit described on this page sits away from them. The Armenia–Azerbaijan border remains closed, and while a peace agreement was initialled in August 2025 it had not been signed or ratified as of this page's verification date, with border demarcation still in progress. Conditions and advisory wording in this region can change faster than a travel guide can be updated, so check your own government's current advice immediately before travelling south and follow any local instruction. Beyond that, the genuine everyday hazards here are the roads and the terrain: long mountain drives, narrow gorge roads, steep unshaded paths and winter conditions.

There is effectively no ride-hailing coverage here, so all taxi use is arranged directly. Prices for a Tatev and Khndzoresk day agreed vaguely at the start are sometimes revised upward at the end, particularly if the day runs long.
How to avoid it
Agree the full route, expected waiting time and total price for the vehicle before departing, and confirm whether the cable car wait is included. Ask your guesthouse the going rate first; they generally arrange better rates than you will independently.

Fruit vodka of unknown and inconsistent strength is sold in unlabelled bottles at roadside stalls throughout the region.
