Getting around Goris
Goris town is compact, laid out on a regular grid and easily walked, which makes it pleasant to spend an evening in. Everything else requires a vehicle, and this is the defining logistical fact of southern Armenia. Tatev, Khndzoresk, the Vorotan gorge and Zorats Karer are not served by useful public transport, and no realistic itinerary here works without either your own car or a hired driver. Guesthouses arrange drivers routinely and usually at better rates than travellers negotiate independently, and a full day covering Tatev and Khndzoresk with waiting time is the standard arrangement. Getting to Goris, marshrutkas run from Yerevan and take roughly five to six hours depending on stops and road conditions, departing when reasonably full rather than to a fixed timetable; shared taxis are faster and not much more expensive per seat. Driving yourself gives the most freedom and the roads are mostly paved and in reasonable condition, but they are long, winding and mountainous, and the gorge road below Tatev is narrow with significant drops. Fuel is available in Goris; it becomes sparser further south.
Problems worth knowing
Tatev from Yerevan in a day is punishing rather than impossible
It is roughly 250 km and around four hours each way. Single-day tours from Yerevan exist and can run to fifteen hours door to door, leaving perhaps ninety minutes at the monastery. Basing yourself in Goris converts that into a comfortable morning.
The cable car has a maintenance closure day
The Wings of Tatev closes on a scheduled day for maintenance and can suspend in high wind. Arriving in Goris for a single night without checking is the most common way travellers miss it entirely.
No ride-hailing coverage
The apps used in Yerevan do not function usefully here. All taxi arrangements are direct, so agree the price and route in advance.
Marshrutka timings are approximate and long
Services from Yerevan take five to six hours and leave when full. Afternoon departures back north thin out; confirm locally rather than assuming an evening option.
Mountain roads in winter
Snow and ice make the southern highway and the gorge roads genuinely demanding between December and March, and passes can close temporarily. Build flexibility into any winter plan.
Fuel and services thin out south of Goris
If continuing towards Kapan and Meghri, fill up in Goris. Stations exist further south but are sparser and some stretches have none.
