Monastery

Tatev Monastery

A ninth-century monastic complex on a promontory above the Vorotan gorge, and one of the most significant religious and intellectual centres in Armenian history. In the medieval period it housed a university whose scholars worked on philosophy, theology and manuscript illumination. Its position — cliff on three sides, mountains behind — is as much the point as its buildings.

Booking: Reached either by the cable car from Halidzor or by the winding road down through the gorge and back up. Check current cable car operating days and hours before planning; it closes for scheduled maintenance and can suspend service in high wind.

Accessibility: The complex sits on uneven ground with steps between levels and thresholds into the churches. The upper cable car station involves a short walk to the monastery gates.

Aerial tramway

Wings of Tatev cable car

A reversible aerial tramway running 5,752 metres between Halidzor and the monastery, recognised by Guinness World Records as the longest of its kind. The crossing takes around twelve minutes each way and passes as much as roughly 320 metres above the Vorotan gorge. It is the single most-photographed piece of infrastructure in Armenia and, for most visitors, the highlight of the south.

Booking: Check current operating days, hours and fares before travelling, as it closes for maintenance on a scheduled day and can be suspended in strong wind. Queues build through the middle of the day in summer; early is better.

Accessibility: The stations and cabins are among the more accessible facilities in the region, though the monastery at the far end is not. Confirm current arrangements if you need step-free boarding.

Abandoned cave village

Khndzoresk and the swinging bridge

An abandoned settlement of cave dwellings cut into a steep gorge, inhabited into the twentieth century and connected by a 160-metre suspension bridge built by villagers in 2012. Some of the original cave homes were reachable only by rope. Walking down through the gorge and across the bridge is the most physically engaging thing to do in the region.

Booking: About 10 km east of Goris by road. The descent into the gorge and the climb back out are steep and largely unshaded, so carry water and avoid the middle of a hot day.

Accessibility: Steep stepped and rough paths throughout with significant descent and re-ascent. Not accessible to wheelchairs or strollers, and demanding for anyone unsteady on uneven ground.

Rock formations and abandoned dwellings

Old Goris and the cave dwellings

The eastern slopes above the modern town are covered in eroded volcanic pinnacles with cave dwellings and storage chambers cut directly into the rock, occupied until residents moved down into the planned town in the nineteenth century. It is reachable on foot from the town centre, which makes it the easiest of the region's cave sites to visit.

Booking: Walk up from the eastern edge of town. No entry fee and no formal paths in places; wear proper footwear and take care near drops.

Accessibility: A steep uphill walk on rough, loose ground. Not suitable for wheels and demanding on foot.

Planned town and architecture

The Goris grid and nineteenth-century town

Goris was laid out to a formal grid plan in the 1870s under Russian imperial administration, with straight streets, stone houses, walled gardens and carved wooden balconies. It is an unusually coherent piece of nineteenth-century town planning in a dramatic setting, and walking the grid is a genuine pleasure rather than merely a way of getting between sights.

Booking: Free to walk. The Axel Bakunts house museum, devoted to the writer born here, is the main indoor stop; check current opening days.

Accessibility: The grid is regular and gentler underfoot than most Armenian towns, though pavements are uneven and the town sits on a slope overall.

Prehistoric stone setting

Zorats Karer (Karahunj)

A field of over two hundred upright basalt stones on a plateau near Sisian, many bearing bored holes. It is widely marketed as an ancient astronomical observatory predating Stonehenge, and that specific claim is disputed by archaeologists rather than established: the site's date and function remain subjects of genuine academic disagreement. What is not in question is that it is a striking prehistoric monument in an exposed upland setting.

Booking: About 40 km northwest of Goris near Sisian, on the road towards Yerevan, so it combines naturally with the drive rather than as a separate trip. Exposed and windy; there is no shelter.

Accessibility: Open rough grassland with uneven footing between stones and no formed paths.
