When to visit Goris
Goris sits at roughly 1,400 metres in a sheltered bowl, which moderates its climate compared with the exposed plateaux to the north, but this remains a mountain region with a large seasonal range. Summers are warm rather than punishing — noticeably more comfortable than the Ararat plain — with hot afternoons in the gorges and cool evenings in town. Spring is green and changeable, with the surrounding hills at their best in May. Autumn is the standout season: settled weather, clear air over the gorges and comfortable temperatures for the exposed cave sites, running through September and often into late October. Winters are cold with regular snow, and the practical consequence is on the roads rather than in town: the southern highway and the narrow gorge road below Tatev become demanding, and the cable car becomes weather-dependent. Wind matters here specifically because it can suspend the cable car.
Best time
May to October. September and early October are the strongest window: stable weather, clear air over the gorges and comfortable walking temperatures for the cave sites, which have no shade. Summer is hot in the valleys but far more bearable than the Ararat plain, and the altitude keeps evenings cool. Winter brings snow and genuinely demanding mountain driving on the approach roads, and the cable car and outdoor sites become weather-dependent, so travel between December and March needs flexibility built into the plan.
