Day trips

Where to go beyond Areni

Some of the best experiences may sit outside the destination itself. Compare distance, time and whether each trip deserves a few hours or a full day.

01

Noravank

The monastery at the head of a red limestone gorge eight kilometres off the main road, with its distinctive cantilevered external stairs and exceptional carved reliefs. The gorge approach is one of the best short drives in Armenia.

Getting there: Requires a car or taxi; there is no public transport up the gorge road. Most visitors combine it with the cave and a tasting in one outing.

Distance

About 15 km from Areni village

Travel time

20–25 minutes each way

Allow

Half day including the drive

Best season

April to June and September to October. The gorge is very hot and unshaded in midsummer and the road can be difficult in snow.

02

Khor Virap

The monastery on the Turkish border with Mount Ararat rising directly behind it, and the classic Armenian view. It sits on the road between Yerevan and Areni, so it fits naturally into the journey rather than as a return trip.

Getting there: Best combined with the drive to or from Yerevan rather than as a separate excursion. Ararat is clearest in the morning and often lost to haze in summer afternoons.

Distance

About 80 km northwest

Travel time

About 1 hour 15 minutes each way

Allow

Half day, or a stop en route to Yerevan

Best season

Spring for green fields beneath the mountain and clearer air.

03

Jermuk

The mountain spa town northeast of the valley, known for its mineral springs, sanatoria and a waterfall. It sits considerably higher than Areni and is noticeably cooler, which makes it a plausible summer escape from the valley heat.

Getting there: Car or taxi; the road climbs steadily. Public transport exists but is infrequent and awkward for a return day trip.

Distance

About 55 km northeast

Travel time

About 1 hour each way

Allow

Full day

Best season

June to September. The road is subject to snow in winter.

04

Goris and the southern route

The southern base for Tatev and Khndzoresk, roughly two and a half hours further down the highway. Areni is the natural place to break the journey between Yerevan and the far south rather than a day-trip origin for it.

Getting there: Marshrutkas and shared taxis on the Yerevan–Goris route pass through the valley. Treat this as the next stage of a southern itinerary rather than an excursion.

Distance

About 140 km southeast

Travel time

About 2.5 hours each way

Allow

Not a day trip; an onward move

Best season

May to October.
