Archaeological site

Areni-1 cave

A cave complex beside the road at the entrance to the village, where excavations from 2007 onwards uncovered what is currently the oldest known winemaking facility in the world, dated to roughly 4100–4000 BC. Archaeologists found a clay treading floor for pressing grapes, fermentation and storage vessels, drinking cups, and desiccated vine, skin and seed remains. The following year the same cave produced a 5,500-year-old leather shoe, preserved almost intact. The cave's stable microclimate is what allowed organic material of this age to survive.

Booking: Check current opening arrangements before visiting; access has varied over the years and excavation work continues. The site is compact and the interpretation is limited, so understanding what you are looking at benefits considerably from a guide or from reading beforehand.

Accessibility: A short but uneven approach from the road with rough ground and steps into the cave. The interior floor is uneven.

Monastery

Noravank Monastery

A thirteenth- and fourteenth-century monastic complex at the head of a narrow gorge of red limestone, roughly eight kilometres off the main road. Its best-known feature is the Surb Astvatsatsin church, whose upper storey is reached by a pair of narrow cantilevered stone stairs projecting from the facade with no handrail. The carved reliefs above the doorways are among the finest medieval sculpture in Armenia. The approach through the gorge is as much of the experience as the buildings.

Booking: Free to enter. The gorge road is narrow and winding. The cantilevered stairs are genuinely exposed and are not suitable for anyone uncomfortable with heights; the church interior can be appreciated from ground level.

Accessibility: The site sits on sloping, uneven ground with steps between levels. The upper church is reachable only by the external cantilevered stairs, which have no handrail.

Wine tasting

Areni wineries and tasting rooms

The village and surrounding valley hold a spread of producers, from established wineries with proper visitor facilities to small family operations working out of converted buildings. The flagship grape is Areni noir, an indigenous red variety that is drought-tolerant, thick-skinned and produces wines with high acidity and notable ageing potential; several indigenous white varieties are also being recovered. Tastings usually include a walk through the production area.

Booking: Contact producers in advance, especially the smaller ones, which may not keep fixed hours. Two wineries in an afternoon is a realistic pace; three becomes a blur. Arrange a driver if you intend to taste seriously.

Accessibility: Varies substantially by producer. The larger wineries have better facilities; small family operations often involve steps, cellars and uneven yards.

Landscape

The Vayots Dzor landscape

The valley of the Arpa river is dry, rocky and strongly coloured, with red and ochre cliffs, eroded formations and vineyards on terraces. It looks nothing like the green north of the country and is one of the most distinctive landscapes in Armenia, best appreciated on the drive between the main road and Noravank.

Booking: The Noravank gorge road is the best short drive in the area. Stop at pull-ins rather than on the road itself, which is narrow.

Accessibility: Viewable entirely from a vehicle, which makes it one of the more accessible experiences in the region.
