Food markets
Vendors along the main road through the valley sell dried fruit, fruit leather, walnuts, honey, preserves and home-produced wine. The most characteristic buying in the region and better value than shops.
The regional town's market, fifteen minutes away, for cheese, produce, honey and everyday supplies. The nearest thing to a proper market in the area.
Local drinks
The indigenous red grape that gives the village its name and Armenia its flagship wine. Thick-skinned and drought-adapted, it produces wines with bright acidity, moderate tannin and red-fruit character that age better than their price suggests. Styles vary widely between producers, from light and fresh to oak-aged and structured, which is a good reason to taste at more than one winery.
Armenian white grapes including Voskehat are being recovered and replanted, and several producers in the region now make serious whites. These are harder to find outside the country than the reds and are worth asking for.
Village households make their own wine and distil fruit spirit, and guests are frequently offered both. These are entirely different products from the commercial wines and are usually much stronger than expected in the case of the vodka.
The region's fruit is pressed and preserved as juices and compotes, served at breakfast and as a non-alcoholic option at tastings.
