Getting around Areni
Areni village is small enough to walk, and a couple of tasting rooms are close enough together to visit on foot, which is the practical argument for staying in the village rather than outside it. Everything else needs a vehicle. Noravank is fifteen kilometres away up a gorge road with no public transport, and the wineries spread through the valley are not connected by anything useful. Marshrutkas and shared taxis running the Yerevan–Goris route pass through Areni and will drop and collect on the highway, which makes arriving and leaving straightforward but does nothing for getting around locally. There is no ride-hailing coverage. Guesthouses arrange drivers routinely and this is the standard solution, usually as a half day covering the cave, Noravank and a winery or two. If you are driving yourself, the main highway is good and the gorge road is narrow and winding but paved; the constraint is not the road but the tasting, and a designated driver or hired driver is the only sensible arrangement.
Problems worth knowing
Tasting and driving do not mix
This is the central logistical fact of visiting Areni. Armenia enforces strict drink-driving limits and the main road carries heavy freight. Arrange a driver or nominate someone who is not tasting.
Noravank has no public transport
The gorge road is served by nothing. Independent visitors need a taxi from the village or Yeghegnadzor, normally arranged with waiting time.
Marshrutkas stop on the highway, not in the village
Long-distance services drop passengers on the main road rather than at accommodation. Confirm with your guesthouse where to be picked up and how far the walk is.
Small wineries may not be open
Family producers often have no fixed hours. Arriving unannounced outside harvest season is a common way to find nothing open in the village.
No ATM in the village
Draw cash in Yerevan or Yeghegnadzor. Running out in Areni means a drive to the regional town.
