What to buy in Areni, where to shop, typical prices, authenticity advice and which souvenirs are genuinely connected to the destination.

Shopping & souvenirs

What is actually worth buying in Areni

Authentic local products, realistic price expectations, where to look and how to avoid taking home something mass-produced and meaningless.

01

Areni wine

The obvious purchase, and buying at the winery is both cheaper and more interesting than buying in Yerevan. Producers will usually explain what will travel and age well.

Typical price

Wide range by producer and bottling

Where to buy

Wineries and tasting rooms in the village and valley

Authenticity

Buy from the producer rather than a roadside stall. Unlabelled bottles sold by the road are home production of unpredictable quality.

Customs: Check your airline's and destination's alcohol allowances. Wine bought here must go in hold luggage unless you buy after security at the airport.

02

Dried fruit and fruit leather

Apricots, peaches, mulberries, walnuts and pressed fruit sheets from the surrounding orchards. Light, cheap, distinctive and the easiest thing to carry home.

Typical price

Sold by weight

Where to buy

Roadside stalls along the highway

Authenticity

Sample before buying, which vendors expect. Very uniform bright-orange apricots are usually sulphur-treated; naturally dried fruit is darker and more concentrated in flavour.

Customs: Dried fruit and nuts are generally permitted into most destinations, but check plant-product rules before buying in quantity.

03

Local honey and preserves

Honey from the surrounding uplands and fruit preserves made from the valley's orchards, sold by producers at the roadside.

Typical price

Sold by jar

Where to buy

Roadside stalls and Yeghegnadzor market

Authenticity

Buy from producers rather than packaged retail, and sample first.

Customs: Honey is restricted or prohibited by some countries' customs rules. Check your destination before buying.
