Family travel
Areni with children
Areni is an adult-oriented destination and there is no point pretending otherwise: the principal activity is wine tasting. That said, it works perfectly well as a stop with children on a longer southern itinerary. The cave is genuinely interesting to children who like archaeology, Noravank's gorge is dramatic, and the fruit stalls are a reliable hit. Most wineries welcome families and will provide juice, but a full day of tastings will not entertain a child.
Babies
Minimal facilities in the village; Yeghegnadzor has shops and pharmacies. Changing facilities outside accommodation are effectively absent, including at Noravank and the cave.
Toddlers
The cave's uneven floor and Noravank's steps and unfenced levels need close supervision. The village itself is quiet and safe but there is little for small children to do.
Children
The world's oldest winery and a 5,500-year-old shoe are a genuinely good story for children of the right age. Noravank's cantilevered stairs are a strong attraction and a real hazard; keep children off them.
Teenagers
The archaeology and the landscape hold up. There is nothing else here for teenagers in the evening, so this works as a stop rather than a stay.
Strollers
Impractical at both the cave and Noravank because of uneven ground and steps. The village roadside is walkable but has no pavements in places.
Car seats
Not standard in taxis or with hired drivers. Arrange in advance if required.
Changing facilities
Limited to accommodation and the larger wineries. Not available at Noravank or the cave.
